Our group discussed a lot about this project through these few weeks. Since the theme is too wide, cover abundant stuffs, we lost in choosing the topic for a long time. After discussion and the advice from our tutor, we set up the topic of Misophonia, which is covered the mental attention in phycological aspect. Nevertheless, the topic is “attention” to media, I think that we should describe something have strong connection of media, So I did the research about the previous study which is about passive and active audience, and do further research about the third-person effect. However, during doing the audio, I found hard to relate to our topic “Misophonia”. We only mention about the audience, which only has limited connection to media, so I felt uncertain about our topic, and ask tutor whether it works few times. When we brought the rough cut to the workshop and let the tutor give comment, he did not criticized our topic, instead, he gave some advices of how we can develop our topic. This makes me feel more confident, maybe I need to focus more about the audio editing and content instead of being entangled in the topic. Overall, our audio work is related to the hyper and deep attention of media, which was discussed in the reading from week 1. Our topic refers to phycological theory, this seems to be unconnected to the media, actually the sound and audience’s (listener’s) reaction of the sound is involved in media aspect. We record the soundscape that reflect the feeling of the audience after listening uncomfortable sounds. However, the resources I found at first are helpless, that makes me felt regrettable. As a result, I paid more attention on the following work. I’ve contacted my group mates proactively and frequently, and contribute a lot to the work. I found a doctor and interviewed her, then translated and recorded. And I also edited the audio with my group mate.
I think the most successful aspects of this work is the sound effects. We considered and discussed a lot about what sound should we add into the audio. Because we desire to make the audience truly feel how uncomfortable the sound can make, so we try to add the annoying soundscape in it. For instance, there is a case of the gong, so we add the sound of gong within; we highlight the chewing sound since we found a lot of people hate this sound through vox pop. In addition, I think the variety of the form or content is another successful part. Our audio contains voxpop, interview and its translation, sound effect and background music. On the other hand, the problematic aspects of the work is what I mentioned above — the topic. The connection of media in my opinion is still not enough.
The work helps me learn several professional skills about audio. Firstly, I have learned the use of H2n audio recorder. It has a bit of functions and I was confused about the different recording directions at first. After watching the guide and practicing several times, I figured out it. What’s more, I have also learned about editing in Adobe Audition. I can set up multitrack now, and adjust each timeline such as volume, cutting or moving the pieces of sound, set up the key frame, as well as make the effects such as fade in and fade out.
In regards to the collaboration, our group have group meeting frequently. We discussed the content together and divide the work at first. Then we recorded the soundscape and shared it. At the last few days we edited the audio together. During the work, we discuss together, shared ideas, give comments and advices, which develops my communication skills a lot. I think it is a significant experience for the future studies.
In conclusion, pb4 teaches me a lot, gives me several skills and experience that is helpful for the further media studies, I will continue practicing the learned skills and make improvement.
