Sketch – recycling dilemma

This sketch takes influence from the western filmic genre as well as anecdotal material, as it shows a person with an empty glass bottle being confused as to which of two bins(waste and recycling) he should put it in. This hybrid was achieved through the replacement of a gun with a glass bottle, a change of aspect ratio and change of colour filters. By combining these two things together, comedy is created where there may not otherwise have been any if they had been done alone. This comedy comes from the very normal and mundane confusion of which bin a piece of rubbish goes into, being exaggerated into a significant and tension-filled event, through typical western cinematography and music.

With this video, we are not so much bringing narrative to a non-narrative format, as much as we are heightening narrative and tension by applying the tropes of the western to a very basic cause and effect story, resulting in a parody of the real life event. At the same time, the western genre is also being parodied, as we took some of the obvious conventions, such as the constant pans and close ups of eyes, and repeated them to the point of ridicule.
