Dark, low-key lighting envelopes my surroundings, punctuated by occasional hints of blue light to provide some visibility in the void. The stage lights fade on. From my position sitting in the wings, the stage appears like a brightly lit doorway through the dark curtains, providing a glimpse into another world. Blocking the doorway stands an actor. Despite his current stillness, he is about to run on as if he ran around the entire building. In the shadows, I notice that his suit jacket has fallen off his shoulder – a white business shirt starkly visible underneath. To the naked eye, it may seem he isn’t ready, not dressed properly, however his maintained stillness awaiting his cue illustrates that this is a choice – a commitment to character.
