REAL TO REEL W2: MARTIN PARR INSPIRED COLLECTION OF LIKE OBJECTS – “Smiles All Round (2020)”

REAL TO REEL

In Tuesday’s Real to Reel class, Eileen, Ollie and I went out into the CBD to take like-subject images of people’s smiles. While I titled this piece “Smiles All Round”, it is quiet obvious that there are in fact, not all smiles around. I think these images tell us a lot about people – because people’s expressions tell us a lot about people. It’s interesting to see how many people are reluctant to show us their smile, and felt awkward in the process of us taking the photos themselves. Most people felt quiet vulnerable in showing us their true smile, so much so that some didn’t smile at all. This is a signifies that not all people are open to strangers. It signifies that not everyone wants to show their emotions. It signifies that there is so much more going on behind that smile than we know.

These last images are particularly interesting, because of the Airpods in the boys ears. We approached them, thinking that they were open to conversation because they were engaged in their own. However, we realised fast when we approached them that they couldn’t hear us because of these tiny things, or at-least they used them to pretend so. I know this because I did mention, that they were engaged in their own conversation prior to us approaching them. This signifies how closed off our society is, and how easy it is to shut people out. Is this because the technology enables us to be this way?
