Project Brief 4 Personal Reflection

Project Brief 4 was the first group project I completed for Media and Communication. The aim of this project was to produce a media artefact that explored the area of mediums. We decided to approach the topic by focusing in on how the media was used throughout history to represent, report and inform audiences about conflict. From their inception, mediums such as video and print have evolved dramatically, and we attempted to draw lines between specific evolutionary jumps and conflict, specifically during World War II. Overall, I believe the final draft of our project turned out to be an improvement upon our initial idea of a simple website with small videos and text explaining mediums. Yet this change in idea halfway through the allotted time did bring some more challenges. I see our final product as a success yet there were some obstacles that proved more difficult to overcome then I initially thought.

The broadness of the project brief was a big challenge for our group. As we are all first year university students, Aidan and Cheyenne being straight out of high school and myself having taken a gap year after graduating, and the lack of assessment guidelines created a lot of confusion as to how we would present our findings. We decided to present how media has been used during times of conflict which was a turning point for our group as we finally had a shared conceptual idea of what our project would centre on. This revelation highlighted a strength of collaboration as the division of the workload allowed for more clarity for each member and relived the stresses of the large project, as we had a specific personal goal which would contribute to the overall design. We decided to create a website as a platform for delivering information, which was another strength for our project. A website allowed any member to update it at any time from their own homes, instead of having to meet up with the other members to contribute.

Working as a group with members all over Melbourne was a difficult obstacle to work around. As we saw other groups present their drafts during our tutorials, we decided we needed a bigger and more cohesive media component for our website and we decided on a series of audio podcasts. Aidan had a recording suite set up at his home, yet due to assessments from other classes and our out of school commitments, it was difficult for our group to organise a meeting outside of class. Our solution for this was to set up a skype call and record separate audio tracks and send them to Aidan to edit into a podcast. This was a much more accessible way for us as a group to record a podcast as it cut out hours of traveling time. Yet there was a drawback with this way of recording, which was the difficulty of having a regular conversation. The natural flow of a face to face conversation was interrupted by bad internet connection and a lack of facial cues informing us on who wanted to speak next. As a group, we created a plan for key discussion points of the podcast to provide a framework, yet we did not want to script the conversation because we wanted it to have a natural feel. Yet, the final edition of the three person podcast was too long, full of tangents and stilted conversation and so as a group we found a solution to the problem. A two person podcast over skype allowed for a much more fluid conversation and ensured all discussion points would be met inside of the ten minute time frame we had set for each episode.

The collaborative nature of this project was a good introduction into the workings of the media industry, yet it provided a few challenges for myself. Coming from the competitive environment of VCE with little group work, delegating work and contributing to a joint project is something I am not used to. This experience highlighted aspects of collaboration that is relevant to my broader development as a media practitioner, specifically the need for better time management. Although we had a long period in which to complete the assignment, there areas of the project that I left too late which could have been easily dealt with early on to avoid a last minute rush. The first half of the allotted completion period lacked rigid organisation but as we realised we needed to come together as a group we began to implement online meeting times and deadlines which improved our collaborative relationship.

Through the completion of Project Brief 4, I learnt a lot about mediums use throughout history, especially in the area of World War II propaganda. The collaborative nature of the project also helped me to develop as a media practitioner as it revealed what I need to improve upon to be an effective contributor to a group venture. I am impressed with our final product and this is due to our effective team work and this highlights how integral collaboration is to producing a quality media artefact.

Week 12 Tutorial Reflection

During the last tutorial of the semester, each group presented the current status of their projects to receive feedback as we entered the home stretch for Project Brief 4. Aidan, Cheyenne and I have recorded the first draft of our podcast and so we could not present it to the class as it had not been properly edited yet. So, we showed the class our new website; Medium Size, were we had the three separate pages: ‘About’, ‘Episode 1: Media Influence’ and ‘Episode 2: Education.’ Aidan explained what each podcast would about. Episode 1 will focus on the influence media has over audiences across various mediums. I emphasised that this will be throughout history because I had focused on propaganda during World War II, specifically how comic books and film were utilised to pander to the sense of patriotism in the American citizens to garner support for the war. Episode 2 discusses how news broadcasting has remained the primary method of educating audiences on current events and world issues as well as how other mediums may be used to fulfil similar purposes.

The feedback given from the class was mostly positive, yet because we did not have a draft of the podcast for them to listen to, they felt as if there was not enough content as of yet. Robbie said he was curious to see our website come to fruition and that the podcasts were a good addition to our project. While I was relieved to be on the right track, I am rather nervous about further recordings of the podcast. Time is running out and while we have set a ten minute time limit on each podcast, editing three voice tracks may be more of a challenge then we believe. Having researched for our initial idea of a plain website, I have a lot of background information to serve as supplementary material to fill out the surrounding website to hopefully add even more content to Project Brief 4. Our group has worked fairly well together but our one weakness, especially me, being poor time management and so hopefully with classes ending this week and a plan for our meetings and recording sessions, we will produce an artefact we are all proud of.

Week 11 Tutorial Reflection

With only  a few weeks left in the semester to complete our project, and a lack of tutor in our Monday class, Aidan, Cheyenne and I have decided to record a few short podcasts on the topic of mediums for our website. These will be backed up with supplementary material relating to the theme of each podcast. While informing the reader of the separate subjects it will also provide a context to how different mediums work together to deliver information. Even though Robbie was absent this week, Brian came in to give us feedback on our idea. We explained our idea to him and he informed us that two podcasts of approximately ten minutes each was enough if we backed them up with supplementary information on the website. This gave our group a lot more clarity on what our final product will look like and we now have a concrete image of how the website will function. With two weeks to go, we are about to record the first podcast as a draft to determine the best way to deliver them. I am excited about recording a podcast as it allows for us to explore the ideas we have researched in a more dynamic and natural way.

Our website has now begun to take shape, each section containing a podcast with the information following it. Here is the link to see it come to fruition.

Week 10 Tutorial Reflection

During my week ten tutorial, my group continued to work on Project Brief 4. We began creating posts on our blog relating to our chosen areas from last week. We used this time as a meeting to discuss how each of our areas can interact with the others. For example, while she was finding example of conflict represented using audio, Cheyenne found a news radio broadcast concerning the bombing of Pearl Harbor which linked to my current research topic of comics and pamphlets being used to add fuel to the fire of patriotism after the attack.

To showcase the advantages and disadvantages of each type of medium, I have written scripts for a short audio, comic and video presentation for our blog. The dialogue of each medium’s story is exactly the same but I will present them in the following order; audio, comic, video, to allow for the audience’s perception of the conversation to drastically change as they consume each of the pieces. I will use the audio scene to establish some expectations only to have those be altered in the final video form to show how people lend their own images to a solely audio experience that differs from every other individual’s perception of the event. This will allow us to explore the advantages and disadvantages of various mediums throughout our project and to show how each medium was used to its full capacity during times of conflict.

Week 9 Tutorial Reflection

During the week, Cheyenne, Aidan and I decided to focus on how conflict is portrayed by media, across history. Aidan found interest in interactive media, especially video games and their presentation of war and conflict. Cheyenne focused her medium of audio into broadcast radio and news coverage which lead into depictions of war through radio. I researched video as a medium and how it was utilised during war times to broadcast propaganda to the mass public to win their favour and turn them against the enemy. I also interested in comics and superheros as vessels for partiotism, especially Superman as he was a fictional figurehead in the fight against Nazi Germany. I have begun to focus on Superman as a character portrayed in comics and will research his adaption to the silver screen to show how mediums interact with each other.

Week 8 Tutorial Reflection

The broad scope is the most daunting aspect of Project Brief 4 yet it does allow us to focus on specific areas relating to our topic that we find interesting. Cheyenne, Aidan and I are researching mediums and today we decided to focus on three different mediums for our research and annotated bibliography. I started to research video as a medium and it became immediately clear that as the most well known medium, particularly in the Western world, it is heavily influenced by other media. Going forward, I will look at the relationships between mediums and how they are utilised to create meaning. By discussing mediums with my group, it became clear that every type uses different means to generate a desired audience reaction and this is an area I am interested in delving in to. Propaganda across mediums is something I have researched in the past and so we might focus on conflict and its portrayal across mediums through history for our project.

What follows are our quick notes of a few broad areas of media contain to provide a starting point for our research.

Week 7 Tutorial Reflection

Presenting my portrait on my friend Keegan to the class was a very different experience compared to my self portrait. Capturing and showcasing my friend’s personality was a much easier task and I was proud of the results as it allowed for everyone to get a glimpse of what it is like to know Keegan.

My Thoughts

Incorporating the found footage was difficult for me as I could not find a source that had anything I could utilise blatantly. I sourced the archived video from Pond5 and overlayed it with Keegan talking as symbolic interpretations of what he was saying. The train filled with logs as a symbol of his transitional journey into adulthood and the large work crew beginning construction of a skyscraper to represent Keegan’s desire to create a work people will one day know him for. Fitting his personality into two minutes was a very difficult task considering I had over two hours of footage and there were idea I still house about a five to ten minute portrait. The little nuances of his personality such as some quirks, his love of video games and especially his relationship with more friends then the ones highlighted in the portrait were left out due to time. While they helped to deepen an understanding of what makes Keegan, I felt it more appropriate, considering the time constraints, to paint a broader picture of the man, book ending his portrait with him doing his hair.

Peer’s Thoughts

I was very happy with the feedback Aidan, Jenny and Alaine gave me as it allowed me to see the my work outside of my own self absorption. They liked how intimate the piece was, created by following Keegan around with the camera and having him interact with it and not ignoring it. It allowed for them to piece together and overall feeling of him as a person because he was not acting as if he was not being filmed so his real self could be brought to the forefront of the portrait. They biggest ‘black hat’ comment I received was the need for more found footage. I totally agree with that because it would have allowed me to create symbolic connections between Keegan and the footage. By re-purposing found footage a different meaning is created due to its new context which allows for it to hold a lot more meaning opening up the portrait to numerous interpretations then just images of the subject.

Keegan Mew: Behind The Fringe (Project Brief Three)

And now… it is time to reflect…

The most successful aspect of my portrait of my friend Keegan is that I managed to capture his personality in the span of two minutes. His voice over from the few interviews if conducted with him allows for the audience to understand his life aspirations and his thoughts and feelings on his life. Coupling the voice over with clips I collected with him just hanging out with friends allow his quirky, funny side to be showcased which helps to create a complete portrait of him. One of the most problematic parts of this piece was incorporating ‘found footage’ into the piece and I chose the three black and white clips so as to create a small narrative that matched up with what Keegan was saying during the interview. The train is symbolic of moving towards the future, the typewriter is a vessel for creativity and the footage of a large construction crew beginning a skyscraper is symbolic if Keegan’s wish to create something that he will be forever recognised for. The problem with this is that it may not be as clear from an audience’s perspective yet with a time constraint of two minutes it is difficult to communicate every single idea succinctly.

Something I learned during this process is that I need to take in account the audience when sculpting a media project. While editing, I suddenly realised that I was leaving aspects of Keegan’s personality out of the portrait because I have known him for years and I take those aspects for granted. Yet an outside source, a stranger in the audience, has no idea who he is and therefore I made sure to bring those traits to the forefront to assist the audience in viewing Keegan the same way I do.

During the making process, finding found footage which could be utilised correctly was a challenge. The music I used was from Keegan’s own band, Error37, which I purchased from the band’s Band Camp page after receiving permission from him to use. This opened my eyes to the difficult nature of collaboration and copyright law and informed me on the process for any future media projects I develop.

Week 6 Tutorial Reflection

Today in our tutorial, Jenny, Oliver and I went off in a group to practice with the Zoom audio recorder. We had to borrow it from building nine and record audio in various environments such as a bathroom, a hallway and outside. We needed to record ambient noise of the surrounding environment, some dialogue up close to the microphone and away from the microphone. This experiment allowed us to understand how to use the Zoom as well as how an environment effects audio recording.

As we are beginning Project Brief 3, a portrait on someone in our life, I will be including interviews with my subject and his friends and so this allowed me to understand which environments to record the interviews.

“Crossroads” (Self Portrait) (Wk 5)

Here is my self portrait Crossroads.

And this my my reflection:

In my self portrait titled ‘Crossroads’ I was attempting to communicate where I feel like I am with my life at the time of release. Transitioning to adulthood and having to face decisions I’ve never encountered before is something I am still coming to terms with, and so I used the repeated imagery of paths and crossroads to represent my future and the decisions leading there. The repeated use of my house, especially during the montage including pictures of me on the front porch, shows how ingrained I am with my home life and how my childhood experiences have shaped me. I used a series of shots of me in the same location as a representation of time passing by as I wallow in my adolescent habitat; content yet itching for something greater. I coupled this with the sound of the bustling city to connect the serene past to the busy future and used the sound of the pedestrian crossing signal to communicate my transition between the two lifestyles.

A challenging aspect of this project for me was capturing ‘myself’ as I am not usually an introspective person. Trying to showcase various aspects of my personality meant I had to reflect on my life and view myself from the perspective of my friends and family which was a deeply unsettling experience for me. Not because I found that I am seen in a negative light but because I do not like being the center of attention, which I played on in the project.

An aspect of my self portrait that I feel did not work was the pace of the text due to the time constraint of the assignment. I wanted to tell a small narrative throughout my piece, a mirror of the way I view life as a vessel for story. Yet to fit in the view on life and its impact on mine I needed a fair amount of words so the screen time allotted to some text makes it hard for others to read without repeat viewing, thus impacting audiences a little less overall as a text.
