Reflection statement 

 

Through the learning in last few weeks, I gained lots of new knowledge about interactive artists and interactive art work. The interactive art is a form of art that relies on the participation of spectator in a way to achieve its purpose. Just like one of the interactive work we saw in week 1’s lecture named ‘a box of smile’ which created by Yoko Ono. It’s a very ingenious interactive work manipulate the viewers’ reaction through the hint of words, which allows the artists to get the particular outcome of audiences’ smiling as the result.

 

In relate to creative process, I think draw a diagram is quiet useful for me to come up with a good idea. It is because it’s easier to select one best idea when you listing all the ideas, techniques and tools that you need down on the paper. Furthermore, I find that the project planning template and block diagrams is also very helpful. Through it we can easily break down the problems into stages and figure them out once at a time, which will make the work more businesslike. Research is also an essential part in the creative process. My idea is come from Scott Snibbe’s main theme of his work, saying an understanding of the world as interdependent. Then I just think of the interdependent between audio and video. Asking myself what will happen if I match one video with different sounds, what kind of feeling and reaction the spectator will get and so on. Therefore, research online will help us understand other’s work and get inspiration.

 

In three weeks, I also learned some techniques in regard to Max. I learned the very basic stuffs like how to create an object, where the signal goes, how to connect the modular objects together into data flow relationships and so on. Actually, it’s quiet difficult for me to understand Max in the first two weeks because it’s my first time learn how to use it. However, it becomes more and more interesting when you actually know it better, especially when it starts involves the audios and videos in the programs. While, max also has some very cool function that I never expect before, which make me excited. For example, we can use the position of mouse to control the sharpness of video and pitch. In our group project, we utilised ‘key’ object to find each letter’s sound with its respective key so that when we type key the sound will come out together. In my own project, I also add music and video in playlist and connect them together with the numbers. I hope I can control Max better in the future after more practices.

 

I think the successful part of my work is that my project expresses the main theme to the audience in an easy and understandable way. There are only six buttons to play with in the presentation mode. After listening these 5 videos, I think the viewers can easily get the idea I want to express, which is sounds can create different atmospheres and give different feeling and understanding about what’s on screen. However, I think there are still lots of things I can to improve in my project to make it works better. For instance, I would create more sounds and change the pitch of them and link with the “mousestate”. Thus, the viewers can use the position of mouse to control the pitch of sound, which will add more interests to my project. The viewers may also have the chance to experience and explore the different feeling about the high pitch sound and low pitch sound. All in all, I enjoy the learning in this three weeks. Hope I can do better in the future.
