WEEK 12 BLOG

Our film project this semester is to do two short food-related documentaries, and each interview a person who works in the Collingwood Children’s Farm in Melbourne. The topic is Animal protection and we have different ways of doing the interviews which are character sitting there and doing the interview and another one to do it while walking and show the audience around. We wanted to create this piece of work to tell the stories about the interviewees themselves hence illustrates the significance of protecting animals as well as the connection between animals, plants and the ecological environment.

The interviewees introduced about their personal backgrounds and working experiences in this farm, hence show their daily working process to us including interacting with animals, taking care of animals and their own opinions on our film topic. We asked as many questions as we could think of and put them in order to make it a whole story which looks fluent and reasonable.

I think the most successful part of our films is that we chose to do one of them with filming while the interviewee is talking hence we’ve got many b-roll footages of good quality other than the interview itself. They helped a lot on editing as well due to we’ve used footages on transferring between shots, covering the bad ones and masking. In this way, we were able to make our film looks vivid and attracts the audience.

Therefore, I’m quite satisfied with these works, I think I would like to try to focus more on sound recording next time because we did the sounds in the easiest way this time and it sounds noisy sometimes hence we had to do the noise reduction job for that. There are many ways that are better for us to do the sound collecting in this situation and we hope to learn more about sound designing and more professional ways of doing the recording.

After all, I’ve learned that everyone has his own eating habits and even family eating cultures. However, we should always be acceptable, respectful and have an open mind towards all those various cultures and personal beliefs which is connected with foods and choice. Protecting animals is an important task for us humans to do and we should definitely not to waste foods includes meat and vegetables.
