Task 4 Korsakow Editing

Once I had shot all my final videos and uploaded them to my computer I had to then convert all of the files into MP4. I was able to do this for a majority of the videos via VLC which has a convert/stream feature however for some of the videos when I converted them it cut the length so I had to try an online converter, https://video.online-convert.com/convert-to-mp4

Although several of the videos had audio patterns I liked such as the water boiling, most just had quiet background noise. I decided to edit together all of the seperate audio pieces in Premiere Pro and export them as an MP3 which would then play over the entire Korsakow page. I feel this as well as the videos with their own audio pattern already will create a very atmospheric experience of sound patterns.

Task 4 Tech Experiment

At the start of task 4, I set myself the goal of dedicating a week to experimenting with different cameras as well as software programs such as Premiere Pro so that I would be able to gage which would be best for my work. However me being me and being completely unable to stay organised even with a weekly plan, I found the week had come and gone and I hadn’t completed this experiment. But I think this was a blessing in disguise because after discovering Korsakow I was extremely confident that this was the program I wanted to use to display my final piece. From the beginning I was very apprehensive about Premiere Pro as I knew from Media 1 that I can get very overwhelmed by the editing process and ultimately be unhappy with my final piece due. Furthermore, with my final piece I am trying to communicate that there is so much to notice, specifically patterns, around us in our everyday lives. For me noticing isn’t an edited experience, it happens whenever it happens and I felt that Premiere Pro would lead to me over editing and perfecting my task 4 piece which isn’t what noticing really is for me. I was interested in manipulating my footage so particular videos and sounds were sped up or slowed down like Daniel Crooks and Jess MacNeil have done in their work but I think because I’m trying to communicate a sense of the patterns in our everyday lives that I want to try and keep the footage as realistic as possible and show that there are patterns without technological manipulation or editing.

In terms of the devices I will use to capture video and audio for my final piece, I felt very happy with the iPhone audio recording quality I had experimented with for task 3 so I will continue to use that. I was originally planning on experimenting with other cameras such as the Sony MC50 or my Canon EOS 600D however after some experimenting with Korsakow, I felt my iPhone would be best. When experimenting with Korsakov I realised that if I were to shoot in portrait or landscape, their would be a border and I felt shooting with a square frame was more universally flattering for all of my subject matters as it would’ve been more difficult to frame some of the small objects if I was looking through a portrait or landscape frame.

However the regular iPhone camera doesn’t allow you to film in square so I discovered the Apple app called Clips. It was free, really straight forward and also a nice way to see my collection of videos form.

Task 4 Korsakow Experiment

In the Wednesday class of Week 11, we experimented using a program called Korsakow. At first I was a bit apprehensive because the software looks so old but I was actually very pleasantly surprised with Korsakow and after a few trials I’m even considering splashing the cash and buying the program so I can use it for my final piece. Once I knew what I was doing it was really easy to use and I think the way in which Korsakow presents your videos and sounds ties in really well with my idea of there being a so much to notice around us. Everything appears at random and is very jumbled which I think is a true representation of what the experience of noticing can be like.

Korsakow also reminded me a lot of an art piece by Candice Breitz that I had seen at the Museum of Old and New Art in Tasmania in 2014. The work, QUEEN (A Portrait of Madonna), is a collection of Italian Madonna fans singing every song from her 1990 album, the Immaculate Collection. I really like the grid setting of Breitz’s video piece because it’s quite overwhelming and whenever I watch it, I feel like I’m constantly trying to watch everyones faces but thats not physically possible. I think this type of layout would be great if I were to continue with Korsakow because I already know that it makes me feel like there is so much to potentially be noticing, which is what I want to communicate in my task 4 piece.

Task 4 Locations

To get the ball rolling for task 4 I wanted to start of by collecting a general list of the patterns I would film and record for this project. Although there are several patterns such as the supermarket checkout beeping and the movement of the Yarra river that I definitely want to use, I do want a fairly large collection of audio and video. I began by walking around the CBD where I noticed patterns such as flashing electronic signs at stores or the footsteps of people at Parliament station. I plan on adding to this list as I continuously notice in my everyday environments. I think the more video and audio pieces I have for my final piece, the more I will communicate my ideas of noticing in that patterns are all around us and it can be quite overwhelming, hence why we don’t typically notice them all.

Task 4 Inspiration

In our week 9 Wednesday class, we watched a number of works that I found really inspiring for my task 4 piece. The first piece we watched was by Robert Croma and I found it quite interesting in how the camera remains completely still but there is still so much movement within the frame. For my task 4 work I definitely think I will do as I did in my task 3 experiments and like Croma has done, and keep the camera motionless and allow for the pattern I’m showcasing to be the only movement. This piece also evoked the thought for me of playing with different speeds for the video content. I had never considered manipulating my footage so it was sped up or slowed down but this could be something interesting to experiment with. This piece reminded me of an artist, Daniel Crooks, who I looked at in Studio Arts in year 12. His video editing has always really fascinated me and much like Croma he manipulates speed. A lot of his videos feature this panel like effect which I had experimented a bit with for more weekly update and I definitely see myself continuing done a similar path of having multiple videos playing on screen at the one time.

We then looked at an audio piece which features countless audio recordings that have been edited into one huge work. I found this piece really fascinating because at times there were completely contradicting and random sounds overlapping or playing one after the other which is something I’d definitely like to explore for task 4 because it creates a very random audio atmosphere and I think this relates to noticing due to what and how we notice being very random at times.

The final activity of this class was to go onto the website http://networkeffect.io/ . At first I was a bit confused as to how we were supposed to interact with this piece but once I began clicking on the different themes at the top of the page, I quickly became very intrigued. I think that knowing the website only allows you to browse its content for a short amount of time, made it even more of an intense experience because I was trying to see as much as I could and this made it quite visually overwhelming but I especially found the audio to be quite anxiety inducing because there was already the constant heart beat but then combined with sound from any of the videos, it became extremely atmospheric and intense. However looking back on this website I think the fact that it is able to create such an intense experience is really incredible and I’ve definitely found the layering of the audio really inspiring for my task 4. I also really liked the video content because a majority of the themes of the videos were very everyday subjects and they were all clearly shot on affordable cameras or smart phones so that gave the website a very realistic feeling.

After this class I researched multimedia artists and found Jess MacNeil who has done some really unique video and audio work. I found this particular piece really interesting in how she has chosen such a simple subject matter but has noticed the shadows on the steps and edited them into a unique moving pattern.I also really like how she has used sound to give a sense of the environment with the constant chatter of people creating another pattern within the work

Task 4 Planning

In the week 9 Thursday workshop we each did quite a bit of planning for task 4 which I found really helpful. I liked just being able to word vomit all my ideas for this project out onto paper as it made me feel a bit more confident about what direction I was going in and what I would realistically be able to achieve in the time period I’ve got.

-Emphasis on pattern and how it inescapable

-What emotions will my final piece create?

-Everyday environments > busy and quiet > natural and modern man made

BIGGEST, BIG, LITTLEST

Biggest: Showing what and how much there is to notice in our everyday environments but emphasising that we can’t notice it all naturally because in order to survive we have to be selective.

Big: Through video and audio show patterns in everyday environments that we could potentially be noticing.

Littlest:

  1. Walk around areas (old and new) I frequently go to and note what I notice > FORM A COLLECTION
  2. Modes of capturing > iPhone, DLSLR camera, Sony MC50, Zoom recorder?
  3. Clashing of video and audio > layering and overlapping > atmospheric
  4. Presentation > Premiere Pro? QuickTime Player? How much editing do I need to do?

Challenges/Risks:

  1. Being organised > pre planning and experimenting
  2. Indecisive > locations and how I want to combine the visual and audio footage
  3. Over editiing/analysing
