After continuing to develop our project matter of album art and its purpose regarding the application of modularity to non-modular art forms (link here), we have also decided to incorporate the theme of “first impressions” into the production of our fragments. In essence, our videos will be based on the initial impact the artwork had on us; our visual interpretation as well as our emotional response. This theme provides our project with a much-needed constraint, as it essentially forces us to focus on the album art as strictly its own entity, without any connection to the music itself. It also helps us to further solidify the project as an exploration of modularity’s applications, as by removing all links between the album cover and the album itself we are ensuring that our focus remains on a strictly non-modular subject matter.
In terms of producing my individual fragments, I want to focus mostly on the physical depiction of the art alone, with only some very ambient backing sound to support the visual aspect. My reasoning behind this is so I can further isolate the album from the music; as I am familiar with a lot of the artists behind the chosen albums doing otherwise might result in me straying away from the theme of first impressions.
An important aspect of this project for us is giving the viewer an incentive to complete the project when it has been incorporated into Korsakow. To do this, we have decided to create an interface where all videos are immediately accessible, each with a single life. Additionally, we are incorporating a final, outro video which reveals the album covers that were the inspiration behind the videos. Giving each video a single life gives the viewer a sense of progression, and the payoff of having the “answers” revealed to them at the end will hopefully give them enough of a reason to watch the entire project.
