Our story is based about a real life experience and showcases themes of diversity and acceptance. We are focusing on the concept of refugees and indviduals coming into a new world and adapting to a new way life. Family and being accepted into a family creates a sense of comfort as well as a sense of belonging. So we decided to base our storyline around 2 brothers, however one is different known as an ‘alter’ bringing in the idea of refugees. The major obstacle between the characters is that Edward wants to become a cop to protect Nathan from aggressive alters, however he doesn’t know about Nathan’s true identity as an alter which complicates their relationship as brothers.
To begin our pitch we began by telling a story about a real life experience with one of our group members and her feelings of isolation and seclusion. From this we aimed to gain a reaction from our panel and the audiences hoping that they can also relate in some way to feelings of isolation. After presenting this, audiences felt engaged and drawn into our film getting the reaction we desired.
Our style of the film has changed due to feedback from our panel. We were told ‘not to be scared to incorporate the everyday human feel of the film’ and show more of the human side of the brothers relationship, before the intense scenes take place. They suggested at looking at films such as Gattaca to help us achieve this look.
Having certain props or specific dialogue about the future weaved into our film can create a better structure when piecing our sci-fi film together. We want to make it less complicated and keep the simplicity throughout the film between the two brothers. It would be best to try and avoid bright lighting and colouring taking away the whole ‘Blade Runner’ feel which we originally planned to do.
In our proof of concept the music and the emotion worked well between the characters. It felt very human like and more naturalistic which is what the audience enjoyed the most as it triggered their heart strings.
