The whole idea of our project was to create something non linear that incorporated the following aspects of modularity and variability. In terms of what they are Modularity is “[media] elements that are assembled into larger-scale objects but continue to maintain their separate identities”, (Manovich, 2001, p.30). Variability on the other hand is information that is made available in many forms. My group and I have successfully shown these two key aspects within our project. We came up with the idea to film clips individually showing our perspectives. Each short clip was then made up into a large scale project showcasing the times of days. Our theme was a day in Melbourne therefore we explore this theme by filming videos that varied throughout the day. We incorporated Variability by making each video different showcasing the city and suburban parts of Melbourne. Our project is created by a cluster of videos that gives individuals the choice to choose what they want to watch. By choosing what they want, they then get to create their own path throughout the project.
Throughout my production I learnt that online screen projects are made into patterns that are different for everyone. Its all about the creation of small clips that are then put together to make a large scale project. In saying this we can then see the difference between an online project and a liner project. Interactivity is very important when making things online as this develops creator and consumer relationships. This can be established through programs such as Korsakow. I also learnt about Algorithmic editing. The reading ‘Making (with) the Korsakow System’ by Matt Soar talks about editing through databases. In this Case the editing made apparent was by placing in and out keywords to arrange the clips into a pacific pattern through the usage of Korsakow.
In each development process the one thing that I struggled with was making things simple. My group and I always over complicated our concepts and layout of our project. This made working on Korsakow more difficult. With the feedback we gained from our other classmates we were able to come up with simpler ways on re developing our over complicated ideas. In the next assignment I will try and make things more simple. When it comes to creating a montage I realised that it doesn’t have to be in complete order to make sense. I learnt this through the examples of certain Korsakow projects as well as through my research on Kuleshov. Its ok to make people question themselves and interpret videos in different ways. Although each video is scattered around in our project it still represents our concept of Melbourne, pacifically a ‘Friday In Melbourne.’ Overall i learnt that media can be an exploration of different parts however we need to move beyond making sense of what is happening as now its about exploration.
The question that still remain’s is Time. How can we show case the passing of time throughout our project? In more depth I would like to explore how social media and technology today is taking time away from people. I want to discover the good and evil elements that are incorporated within this concept through possible experimentation. An idea of an experiment that Each group member could do is give up up social media for a day. From this my group and I could document what we replaced our social media time with. The overall idea of this concept is to show how people now take time for granted and forget the value and importance of time. Researching statistics on the large impact social media has on taking time away from individuals can show how people have lost value in time. We can possibly to do this in a nonlinear way by possibly using these statistics as thumbnails for videos. I still want to research more about this concept in order to get a clearer understanding on the importance and value that time has on our life.
