Film and Televison has been modernised from its traditional ways into online forms on the digital web. The question asked is “how do we make an interactive screen media project that is modular and variable.” To begin to answer this question is to start by researching. An example of a genre of film that shows these two key factors is documentaries. From my own knowledge documentaries are an important part of film and television as it is an expression of real life situations that convey meaning to a wider audience. Most are unscripted and made collaboratively. The ‘Are You Happy’ project is a documentary that demonstrates the truth of the people and their reactions when the camera is placed in front of them. The documentary developed in 1960 by ‘Jean Rouch and Edgar Morin’, was remade to show the difference of times and the growth of technology. It is a collaborative piece demonstrating the rise of online platforms and interactivity. Modularity is shown as each clip is made into fragments and variability is also shown as audiences get to choose what they want to see.
The reading ‘We’re happy and we know it: documentary, data, montage,’ by Dovey, Jon, Rose and Mandy, focuses on real life storytelling and the ways in which real life storytelling has been transformed, in a non linear way. The reading identify’s how ‘the web is changing the way we make films’ (Dovey, Jon, Rose, Mandy, 2012). Online intreactivity through websites and Social media sources are foundations of creating new projects that are non linear. This can be argued as the reading suggests that social media sources are influencing the development and creation of a new wave of documentaries. It is a place where personal stories are shared which can be shown through text, imagery and videos showing aspects of modularity. These social media platforms are easily accessible as inidviduals have the ability to choose what they want to view which also displays aspects variability. This has given me a better understanding on how to create a project that is modular and variable.
Chris Marker created a travelogue that journeys from Africa to Japan created through a montage of images. From this Project the technique of montage really influenced me. Documentaries can be created through a series of montage’s where images or videos from different sources are combined together to create a storyline. Montages have been around since the beginning of film but in todays society there are new way’s formed to display the concept. Chris Marker’s travelogue has more linear aspects then interactivity. Making it digitally interactive for audiences by sharing links to other sites such as blog post’s or websites throughout the montage is an idea on how to make it less linear, however I want to explore more about montage and other ways of making it interactive.
