Docubase is an online website that shares creative documentaries. These documentaries are not only made to entrain, but are a voice for individuals to express themselves in a non linear way. They are interactive and collaborative evolving from the traditional style. Its main approach is to build a ‘community of participants’ and demonstrate all the creative possibilities that can be transformed in to a documentary.
A documentary that I came across was a video called ‘Seances’. The creators goal was to create a visual film using digital sources to establish the sense of data, in particular from the silent era, being distorted and lost through time. ‘80 % of films from the silent era are lost’ as people are becoming more obsessed with the internet and online media. The Seances tries to bring awareness online as it is a more evolving platform.
The documentary can be identified as an online source as It is developed as a web-based and ‘installation-based film experience’. It invites audiences to engage with the film as If they were seeing it once, conveying the silent film idea. The bigining of the film asks for viewers to ‘click and hold’ in order for the short film to begin. This is one of the qualities that makes it an interactive film base. There is no pause button or share button. This is created in order for audiences to understand the attributes of a silent film bringing them to the traditional cinema era.
The project teamed up with an online website NFB which make’s it easily accessible and available for audience members. Docubase provides a set of playlists categorizing the videos making it easier for individuals to pick and choose their desired project. Once the project is selected, viewers are given a short summary about the documentary. There is also a link to the project and its online media platform, for me it was the NFB website. Interaction between creator and consumer Is also made available. The audience members are able to contact the creator through emails, however is this interaction enough? Is there more to interactive digital media?
