Indeed, what did! Why are you here, studying this? For me, it is because of one very important film I saw when I was about 16, a creepy film called Eraserhead. It is the first film made by David Lynch. He made it over 5~ years, between 1971 – 1977, on a budget is $20,000. It is a black and white, surrealist film. It follows the main character Henry, placed by Jack Nance. Henry works in a derelict industrial area. Throughout the film, Henry reconnect with his girlfriend, who has had a baby, which is surrealist representation of something horrible. The film is Henris struggle with fatherhood responsiblity, love, and all manner of horrible things. It is said that there is no definite explanation for the film, and Lynch himself confesses that he either does not know what it is about, or will not tell people; whether to let them decide what the film means to them, or because the film is too personal, or any other reasons. I love the black and white of the film. I love the constant eerie noise in the background. I love the organ music, played by Fats Waller. I love everthing about the film, the songs, the Lady in the Radiator. The style of the film significantly inspired my current visual aesthetic. Deep black and white, eerie, and offputting. I am here in this course learning to be a film maker. Film is a medium in which I am always thinking. I am always thinking of how to use a visual medium to inspire emotions and feelings in the viewers. I would like to put people through an experience when they watch a film of mine, one so vivid they would think that they themselves had been through what had happened on the screen. And like an experience, a film that could change them, help them, comfort them. Allow them to experience things they could not or would be impossible, or see things through another persons eyes, or introduce them to something new. If I can help one person through my films, I would be happy 🙂

Confusing

August 7, 2013

I have never used a blog before. To me right now they are very confusing, and I am in way over my head. I am trying to figure them out slowly but surely. It’s just so strange. It’s stressful.

Second Class

August 1, 2013

Well I got to class late. I dived into the wrong reading about double loop theory. So far it is very very interesting. It seems to be psychology based, identifying and understanding the mental maps and subtle undercurrents of our mind and how they influence what we do. I am really excited to read the rest of it. The reading I was supposed to do but did not, was about the blogs. The class discussed it, and how useful a blog could be. Some key points were that people may be too shy to share work out loud in class, and thus much more comfortable to do so online. This would give quiet people a voice, and allow people who are struggling to see work done by people who are not struggling, and use that to help them, where they might not feel comfortable asking in the class room. The blogs seem likely to break down the barriers a lot of us (classmates) seem to have, and to share and co-operate much easier.
