Opinions on Voracity

Lachlan linked week 4’s symposium to this prank article published in the University of New South Wales’ student publication Tharunka. He questions the voracity of online news due to constant competition among various publications and websites to disseminate news as fast as possible. This is an extremely valid point I’d overlooked. In the race to get stories to readers, how much time is there to verify information before it is shared?

Callista purports it comes down to instinct, which may be a result of an individual’s cultural upbringing. Someone who is not as network literate, for example, may not think to cross-check information they read on the web before digesting it as the truth.

I would say to trust your instinct and do some investigation. If something you read on the Internet doesn’t sound believable, Google it.
