Making Sense of Social Media Assignment 2 – Post 2

Identify a specific target audience informed by an analysis of the Sensis data and propose a platform or platforms that is/are relevant to your target audience.

When going through the Sensis data, we identified that 56% of the Australian population use the Internet more than 10 times a day. In addition, it also states that 31% admit they spend too much of their time on social media, with 18-29 year-olds being the highest demographic. With our topic that targets online bullying, the Sensis reports present that 27% have witnessed online bullying/harassment, and 16% have been victims of the issue. In relation to Online Bullying, this issue might refer to the notion of social media having a negative effect on privacy, production, sleep, etc. The social media platform Instagram is used by 45% of the Australian population, third place behind YouTube and Facebook. Although Instagram is only the 3rd most social media sites used, Instagram’s age demographic in Australia (i.e. 18-24) is suitable for our project. Our primary target audience is teenagers and young adults.

Furthermore, we chose Instagram as our preferred platform for the project as Instagram offers many features which we as a group could utilise to create engagement towards our potential audiences. Referring back to the data where users admit they spend too much time on social media, we want to create content that users can look at for more than a couple of seconds. We want to produce content that is not useless and refrains the user from scrolling to another post immediately. Our posts have to engage the target audience and make the most of their time on social media.
