Making Sense of Social Media Assignment 1 – Post 3

Post 3: How will your own work in this studio be informed by your understandings of social media, the data from the Sensis surveys and your examples of social media mentioned above? What information do you hope to gather from the Sensis data?

In terms of my work in this studio, though I have not decided what I want to do yet, I am interested in how social media has impacted society’s everyday lives, including businesses and organisations. As previously mentioned about the rise of participatory culture and freedom of control amongst users on social media and the Sensis data reports, I want to explore more about how organisations have found a strategy to entice their consumers, post Web 1.0 dot-com bubble burst. The two-edged approach of organisations giving consumers the control to produce one’s own content, whilst gaining personal information and social activity in return, is something I want to discover more because I perceive it as an invasion of privacy. Still, people don’t seem to mind it if they can gain access to social media. Furthermore, I’d like to learn more about social media’s contrast being both empowering and exploitative in terms of its users and brands. With my examples of social media, I would explore more into depth about how the affordance of social media empowers users, especially in countries with less freedom of speech about how they raise awareness of issues in the world. As I noticed that traditional media (TV and Newspaper) is controlled by an organisation, certain news might not appear on their platform. But with the access of User-generated content, users can share information on social media that was not appointed to or brought up by the media.
