Deconstructing/Reconstructing Genre Assignment 2, Exercise 1

I enjoyed working with a script for this exercise, and it was interesting learning about the mic and the recording equipment. Our aim was to adhere to the script to create an audio piece that had depth to the sound, and that sounded natural but clean (within the realm of scary gurgling monsters). I believe that we were partially successful in achieving this goal.

In recording the dialogue for the outdoor section of the script, we chose an area that was a bit crowded and noisy, but indoors. I think that this was a fairly logical choice, as it minimised the wind noise, but the sound was still polluted as if we were outside. After recording those first few lines, we moved into a nearby stairway. I think that this was a mistake, considering that the level of ambient sound was almost the same. Instead, we should have contrasted the noisy outdoor setting with a cleaner recording in a quieter location.

While editing this piece, I found it difficult to transition smoothly between the dialogue and the footsteps. I think that this was because we recorded all of the sections of dialogue separately. This meant that the volume and level/quality of the ambient sound varied significantly. To create smooth transitions, then, I chose to fade in and out of each of the recordings so that there wasn’t a noticeable cut, but I’m not sure that this was the most effective solution.

Generally, this was an interesting exercise in something that I haven’t done much of before. I believe that we should have chosen our locations to record more carefully, and that we possibly could have improved the consistency of the sound by recording the entirety of each scene at once. However, I think that we were successful in achieving the illusion of depth, and that, at the very least, we were true to the script.
