DISPLACING THE FAMILIAR

Week 5.

This is one of the best things I’ve ever seen.

I was searching for a video that expressed ‘heightened senses’ and presented the world through ‘alien eyes’. What I initially had in mind were the old, Australian smoking commercials of quick cuts and ECUs of rotting lungs and speeding through veins and whatnot. But, after much searching (a lot of searching, seriously, I spent too much time searching), I finally entered the lucky key words into YouTube and found this. And I don’t even care anymore how much time I wasted searching. Because this video is one of the greatest things I’ve ever seen. (I also found some other pretty cool videos, but I want to dedicate a post to this amazing, amazing video.)

This video kind of works by making the familiar unfamiliar – what Jasmine’s alien game was about. It also reminds me of the Hands: Speaking Out Loud Korsakow film, because it too uses abstract form conventions – isolating things from context so that their ‘abstract qualities’ appear more striking and unfamiliar. This isn’t only with visuals. It’s with sounds, too. In fact, the sounds accent the visuals. And vice versa. It’s really stunning.
