STORY-TIME WITH FLORIAN

Week 4.

This week’s extended research brought me to look up Florian Thalhofer (magnificent name), the German dude who invented Korsakow.

I found his website – http://www.thalhofer.com/#. It’s interesting that he first and foremost considers himself an artist (and then a filmmaker and software inventor). But what I find more interesting is in the description of Korsakow – “a software to create a new kind of film and a principle to create a new kind of story.” It’s the latter part of this sentence which strikes me. A new kind of story. Can we really reinvent story? Or will this ‘new’ story come under a different category? Will we have to make a new term to accommodate for the different logic of navigating through ideas?

I also had a look at one of his projects, Money and the Greeks, which is pretty cool.

Then I found a video. During the lecture and in the readings this week, there was a considerable amount of discussion on narrative and storytelling. This is an interview with Thalhofer about his work. He talks about some pretty interesting stuff about storytelling. One thing that talks about, for example, is how our rigid rules of storytelling are constraining us, particularly in terms of documentary. These rules coerce filmmakers into making a documentary that “fits a story, but… is losing touch with reality”. Check it.
