O

Week 3. Assessing my sketch vid.

WHAT I LIKE:

  • Creative interpretation of brief (shoot a clip using round things in your house). Literally used the letter O. Multiple times. How more circular can you get than the letter O?
  • Handheld shots making it slightly shaky-cam. In a way, it sort of emphasises stillness. The stillness of the Os.
  • Same shot sizes. So when we cut to a different shot it’s only slightly different (i.e. the thickness of the O, etc.)
  • Difficult to recognise size of the Os. The Os are actually quite large – they’re on a painting. But the feedback I’ve had tells me that people think they’re from a newspaper. Which I like. I kind of wanted it to feel like that. The reality is that I can’t shoot macro shots using my phone camera, but I like that I gave the impression of macro shots.
  • Black and white filter. Makes it look more newspaper-y.
  • The double-O shot and how it is edited in. It kind of comes as a surprise.

WHAT I DON’T LIKE

  • I like and I don’t like the speed of the editing. It’s slow. And this kind of slowness works. Because it makes everything seem still. But at the same time, is it too slow? I can’t figure it out. I’ve watched it too many times.
  • Out of focus shots. Pretty much all of them are out of focus. My phone couldn’t focus at that close a distance.
  • The really, really shaky cam on the third shot. Not so subtle and nice.
  • Do I or do I not like the duration of the final shot? It’s longer than the others. I think it works, but I’m not sure.
  • Although the video kind of comes ‘full circle’ (ha.) – back to an O similar to the opening O – it does this very quickly and it doesn’t have much impact. It kind of seems like the video fizzles out or something.
  • The changes in atmos sound for each shot. I should have just had the one atmos track running underneath all shots.

I like this video. I mean, it’s not the most riveting video. But it’s a good sketch video. A creative interpretation of the brief. Wew!
