This week we were set to pitch our show for assignment #4, unfortunately, my body decided to join the flu season hype and I wasn’t able to attend my team’s final presentation.
We pitched a show titled “The Charlie Show”, a show I could only really describe as “the eric andre show… but somehow more unhinged”. With its talk show base, spiced with soap opera flavour, our concept capitalised on the talk show element that was familiar to us while still allowing for experimentation. “The Charlie Show” would have made use of pre-recorded clips and segments, all the talk show elements; game segments, guest interviews, musical guests, etc. We would have also made use of different camera angles and styles, to give a “behind the scenes” vibe to parts of the show.
During the planning process, my group had already come up with rough plans for both episodes and their directions. I think that this helped us get into the nitty-gritty of both episodes’ segment ideas and would have helped seal our show’s pitch to the class.
Something we were concerned about going into the pitch was pulling off a tracking shot, as we remembered the difficulty a team had in the last assignment. I was informed by my teammates that we received feedback telling us to go for it as we would probably never have an opportunity to try it again. This feedback is genuinely so refreshing, compared to the competitive environment I had in my diploma, where experimenting was seen as potentially being a detriment to your group’s work.
As I wasn’t there, I only had a rough idea of what each group had pitched. But I was most drawn to the dating show concept. (I think that says more about me than it should)
Something to be said is that I loved how as a class, we decided we would still try to incorporate the other team’s ideas into the chosen concept. Be it as an ad or as an easter egg.
My group’s concept ended up winning the pitch, I’m excited to see what we create.
