It was bound to happen. I’ve started watching Game of Thrones. I always used the excuse “I’m too far behind, it’s too late now” but two days later I’m three episodes into season 4. (How I managed to knock 3 whole seasons over? years of practice.) It was the hype that eventually GOT me to cave in (GOT, get it? GOT, Game of Thrones??? Ha-ha. See? I’m not funny sorry), Two days ago I couldn’t care less if this Jordan Snow (Jenkins? Gerald?) was alive or not, now I join the rest of the world in becoming a slave to the story, hanging off every teaser. What I found most interesting is the issue of spoilers, I’d never tried to avoid spoilers for GOT, I never intended to watch it, but then again I never went out of my way to find out what was going on and who killed who. I didn’t care. Of course there were things I expected, the incest, Sean Bean dying (STOP KILLING BOROMIR), Joffery dying at some point. But there were things I was surprised didn’t leech it’s way into my twitter feed, Facebook wall or instagram feed.
(SPOILERS OK)
This ‘red wedding’. I’d heard of it. And I was certain this was the name of the episode that Joffery would die. His wedding was coming up in season three, so I thought yeah, this red wedding episode will be the one where he dies. Hell WHAT THE HELL I WAS NOT READY FOR THE RED WEDDING BECAUSE THE DAMN EPISODE WASN’T EVEN CALLED THE RED WEDDING IT CAUGHT ME OFF GUARD I DIDN’T ASK FOR THIS
(breathe in, breathe out)
My point is, it is no secret that Game of Thrones is one of the (if not the most) watched television show around right now, the world is obsessed. It’s trending on twitter every other day, the stars are fought over for talk show interviews, how did they keep such a secret from me? There is like some unspoken fan contract, not to spoil aspects of the show (I’ll let the Joffery thing go, I was looking forward to it so I didn’t mind knowing he was on his way out, everyone was probably partying and couldn’t contain their celebrations), its strange how audiences act when something they love has a secret that some do not know. It’s like an indirect pinky promise, you feel you are apart of the story and therefore keep the characters secrets. This is a very long post, but its been a very long weekend, and I’m glad that even though I was 5 seasons behind, there were times where I was genuinely surprised at the plot of the story.
