This weeks workshop had to evolve to become part workshop, part lectorial, thanks to labour day.  We discussed the points that the readings by David Gauntlett brought up about the meaning of ‘media’ and what it means for consumers and content creators today. David makes a point of not looking back, but remaining intent to continually move forwards with media and I remember someone brought up the point to the contrary: it is indeed useful for someone interested in or studying media (for example, yours truly) to look back on how media has progressed and the causes and intent behind these advanced. Is it to meet demand, to remain competitive, to benefit society, to make a profit by offering a product unavailable elsewhere? The intent behind historical advanced comes back to David’s top three most important ‘things’ to know concerning media. Where an intent to benefit society, making a positive impact or sending a positive message is the most important aspect that any content creator should be aware of. So different advances in technology in the past can then be ranked by what they offer and what the intent behind them was. I’m sure advancements in the iWatch though is a much more ethical creation than the advancements in the telephone communication, allowing to contact emergency services be more accessible. But that’s just me.
