In our lectorial turned practical, we were assigned the Emporium to search for every form of media within it. Without sounding too much like a spy film, the mission was successful and interesting in a way I didn’t think it would.
In our findings we discovered these forms of media:
- Music playing throughout the building [ IMG_1879 ]
- Scannable QR codes
- Touch screen maps and advertisements with audio responding to the animation
- Ads played on a loop on demonstration TV models
- Shoppers on their smartphones, on social media or a phone call
- Newspapers
- Phone ringtones
- Free wifi availability
One thing I found interesting as I was forced to stop and look at all the forms of media that we as consumers are presented with everyday, is that no one notices. Looped ads are ignored, the obsession with updating facebook is a norm, everything is normal and integrated into every aspect of our lives. The novelty of technology to some degree has worn off, it is a tool and a necessity used everyday for everyday tasks. This is by no means a bad thing, educating ourselves about current events happening all over the country and all over the world is an incredible phenomenon. Not to mention keeping in touch with loved ones or finding new ways to advertise products and make them more interesting. Its just incredible that all this technology is so normal now, and that not using media in the process of producing or promoting a creative piece or even establishing a business is essentially shooting yourself in the foot.
