Last night we had our final screening showing work completed over the semester. It was very exciting to see my advanced video piece #1 and hear the words I’d written for Darcey’s come to life on a big screen! Seeing this, in addition to the work of my classmates – I didn’t realise until last night how many works I’d been involved in! In addition to my primary work ‘How do you like your eggs?’ and Darcey’s ‘I AM EASY TO FIND’ that I put most of my creative energy into, I acted in Rob’s advanced video piece, and in Darcy’s, in addition to some camera work.
What I have learnt from Robin and my classmates by way of this involvement this semester is invaluable to the future work I will do. In terms of technical skill with the camera, our Friday classes in particular where we we were given class exercises to practice technical aspects was not something I had encountered before in a studio. It provided me an opportunity to play around with settings, to fail, and to try again – which ultimately ensured my learning in this area.
Additionally, the collaborative approach taken within this studio has been a positive area to practice in. Ultimately media work, the work I want to do, will always be created by a team. Teamwork is a skill that involves trust, communication, and patience, and like any skill is one that requires to be practiced and honed over time.
The practice and lessons of observational writing will too stay with me. I have learned throughout his practice that it is the seemingly small moments of the every day that can provide a spring board for visual work to take place. Keeping a record of these small moments is essential to a creative practice and can only make me a better filmmaker, which is why the practice of observational writing something I will continue with after this studio into the future.
