We have made good progress this week – gathering footage, and creating soundtrack drafts. We have a structure figured out for the essay film which involves asking questions directly to the viewer – implicating and asking them to be part of the nostalgia-making process, whether successful or unsuccessful. There is an important focus on appealing to the senses to try to elicit feelings of nostalgia despite the fact that this feeling is so personal and unique to every individual.
I have been playing around on Adobe Audition in creating an audio track for the poem film. Originally, I included various musical sounds – slow piano jazz and cello. After consultation with Mina and the group, I decided to strip it back a bit more, and include more breaks of silence, and calming nature sounds, so that the track has a certain ebb and flow to it.
I’m thinking about some specific visuals we could add to the film, and I like the idea of including some iconic old films which are in the public domain. I’m thinking of datamoshing or manipulating these clips in some other way to emphasise the already ‘fragmented’ nature of film and filmmaking – a film is pieced together, like a puzzle with no real solution, and easily manipulated. I recall George Méliès’ iconic editing techniques, and Buster Keating’s stunt work as examples. Coincidentally, both myself and Dorian thought the spooky image of Méliès’ iconic moon face would be quite fitting for the tone of the film.
