In the same way that the clothes we put on our back tell a story about us to the rest of the world, so do the shoes we put on our feet. It doesn’t take being a ‘sneaker-head’ to be able quickly identify the infamous swoosh logo that is Nike; the world’s largest athletic apparel company known for its iconic footwear.

Stepping out into Melbourne’s busy strees, Liv, Tilly and I quickly realised just how prevalent Nike shoes were amongst city goers. Whether it was a pop of purple or orange, a low cut or high top, crisp white or all over black – these shoes were everywhere.

Through out our journey, we stumbled across a couple who were unintentionally matching with their shoes. It was endearing to see two people who had such similar style be drawn to one another. We also came across a set of friends crossing the road both wearing Nike but in contrasting colours, perhaps a reflection of their different personalities.

Our group was fascinated with the idea that a single brand has been able to become such an integral part of fashion and street style culture. The iconic brand and its legacy is one that people feel beamingly proud to purchase, put on each morning and enthusiastically pose in when asked for a picture.

The photo shown below showcases not only what we set out to capture but also demonstrates Melbourne’s rush out culture. People walking quickly to catch public transport while trying to lug their heavy bags, undoubtedly tired and eager to get home, and on such a mission that they become completely unaware to the young girls taking photos around them.
