- Examples of works: 10,000 Moving cities— same but different
- Visitors can select any city or place, using a digital interface. About the chosen place, the Internet is searched in real time for latest text, image, video and sound informations. Four projectors and eight audio speakers project the results into the space. Visitors are able to walk through the model and experience the information in 3D.
Attracted and inspired by images, sound, text and videos, visitors explore the places and perceive fragments of the immense amount of data. Additionally audio and visuals constantly change, they are never the same, always in movement as the place as itself. Just as all cities over the world are different, so different and alive appear the projections and sounds. Each new request always creates new representations of the real world as a combination of visitors and digital matrix.
In this sense, the artwork explores how globalization creates “places without a local identity” – as described in Marc Augé’s essay Non-Lieux (1992) –, and stimulates a reflective attitude leant on a novel “immersive confrontation” with the digital society of our time.
User-generated content is the source of the audiovisual information not censored nor chosen by a certain community, rather produced by the public including visitors maybe. Each request enables us to join and actively participate in social movements of our time.
- What i find interesting about the work is that the artist use audio-visual form to present the appearances of 10,000 cities in the world. They seem to be similarly but the differences also exist. And during the process, audiences can choose any places to know their recent informations in many media types. This interactive process improves audiences’ sense of experience when they visit the exhibition.
- The idea of ‘ same but different ‘ is very appropriate for many things. I think i will borrow this idea and consider things from this aspect, and maybe i will find more interesting ideas for my future works. Also, the audiences’ sense of experience is very important, i will focus on the interaction with audiences.
