Mia Falstein-Rush, a MIFF programmer spoke to the class this week. It was exciting to hear someone working with the largest film festival in Australia speak candidly about their experiences and how her career has developed. This past year I have been gradually coming to terms with the idea that success in the media, arts and events industries (as well as many many others I’m sure) is largely reliant upon who you know, your own personal network of connections. Seems obvious, and cynical, though I don’t intend to be. Though difficult to begin with, you can always seek to grow your network. It was refreshing to hear Mia be upfront about the linear (or not so) path her career has taken her on by providing what was essentially her entire work history as it related to film and events. The foundation of which being none other than free labour and volunteering. Unfortunately, this in itself acts as a large barrier to so many people gaining paid opportunities in this line of work.
Oh, and there’s also skill and insight necessary too — which we saw a lot of today!
