Film/Tv Reflection 6: Question 7

Question: 7
In this clip screened in the lecture from the Coen brothers’ ‘Blood Simple’ describe what is happening in terms of the edits specifically in terms of the audio and video. Also name the different kinds of audio you can hear.

I loved the suspense that was built up in this scene, from the acting to the audio and sounds which played a significant role in building of tension. In the lecture, I learnt that the audio was in fact cut over the actual video (a j-cut), seen by the sound coming before the image.
The audio uses ambient sounds to create tension and build the over all suspense that the director was aiming to produce. The eerie steps on the wooden floor, the sirens in the distance, even the tension in the air helped build this anticipation throughout the scene. These sounds go right through the end as the climax is reached with the gunshot that really frightened and caused a great deal of panic- a fantastic way to act as a sort of intense release for the end of the scene where one of the men is killed. It captured the viewer’s attention through the tension that was built up, which is one of the reasons it is such a successful scene.
