Assignment 4 Reflection – Post Production

As both the editor and the sound guy of our short film, post-production was where I had the most responsibility and the biggest job to do so far in the production. I have had some previous experience editing various things, such as other assignments or my own cringe YouTube videos from when I was younger, however, I had not had much experience editing a full short film so there were a few hurdles I had to overcome when I first started editing.

Though I understand most of Premiere Pro and it’s basic features, initially I struggled with keeping an organised work ‘area’ in the program with the amount of video clips, audio clips, and sound effects I imported becoming overwhelming. This problem was mostly due to laziness and after Tim shamed me for it I finally cleaned it all up which only took around 10 minutes at most.

The biggest challenge initially was syncing audio and video manually, as on our first day of filming the camera did not record any audio, meaning the auto synchronize feature in premiere pro would not work as it needs two audio sources to sync together. Pretty much the entire first day of editing was spent just syncing the audio and video, though thankfully my whole group helped out making it easier and far less tedious than if i was on my own doing it.

After the audio was all synced editing moved pretty smoothly at first with our first goal being to put together a rough cut, this knowledge that we were just putting together a rough cut was a good way to start as it meant there wasn’t too much pressure in making it look amazing as the goal was just to get a general idea of the flow of the short film. As the editing went on though there were a few issues, such as realising we missed a few small scenes while shooting that in the moment of filming did not feel necessary to film, however in editing it became apparent that these scenes were quite important to the flow of the film. Unfortunately we were not able to re film these scenes so I had to edit around them.

Editing around these missing scenes varied in challenge, some of them were relatively easy while others, specifically the ones in the climax proved very hard as without them the film felt quite disjointed and random. In the end I hope the film still flows coherently, which I believe it does but i may be biased.
