The production side of our film went quite well in the grand scheme of things, We filmed over the course of three (technically 4) days and got most of the footage we needed. As the sound guy of my group, I was in charge of using the boom mic to record sound. Initially, it took me a bit to learn the ins and outs of the sound device as I was only a little familiar with it from the exercise we did earlier in the class. On the first day of shooting It took me a bit to get used to holding the boom mic over my head for a period of time, as the way I initially held it caused me pain in my shoulders for our longer scenes, I overcame this problem by the end of the day and on day two I didn’t face any problems when it came to recording sound.
One problem that only became apparent after the recording had finished was the problematic background noise in some scenes, specifically in the opening scene which takes place in a kitchen. The kitchen we filmed in at RMIT had a very loud fridge that while we recorded didn’t sound too disruptive, however after looking over the recordings it was quite disruptive. This aspect was my fault and came from me not checking the recording while we were filming, so next time I work on a film in the sound area I will have to make sure to check my recordings while filming is still commencing to avoid problems like this.
Along with sound, I am also the editor of our short film, which during production I feel I didn’t embody enough. There were definitely times where I should have noticed filming mistakes that would have made editing easier had we remedied. Such as small, inconsequential moments that while filming didn’t feel needed but during editing has since become a point of issue when making the final edit coherent and watchable. Apart from this though my role as editor during production did not provide much to do as I was already pre occupied with sound, in the future should I have to handle both roles it will definitely be a priority to balance them fairly and so the best possible product is made.
Overall though I believe I executed my roles the best I could given my inexperience though I can already see where I need to improve for next time.
