Assignment 4 Reflection – Pre Production

During Pre-Production my role as editor and sound guy/designer meant I didn’t have as vital of a role to play as the others in my group, due to this I tried to help out by doing small things such as the safety sheet and helping write the scene breakdowns. Regarding my actual role during pre-production, as the editor, I made it a point to watch films that I thought would provide possible inspiration edit-wise, and films our director specifically said were an inspiration for the film. Films such as Possession, Black Swan, The Babadook and other recent horror/thriller films. Watching these films, especially Posession gave me a lot of ideas when it came to the editing of the film, the use of scenes that are quickly cut, contrasting with other scenes that are long and unedited was a style I think made Posession very effective at creating an unsettling atmosphere.

Alongside this as I was also the sound guy of the film I went through the script and made a list of all possible sound effects I may have needed in the post-production to save important time while editing (though most of these sound effects I sourced ended up not being the greatest). Due to the fact I live around an hour away from the city, it often made it hard for me to meet with my group on short notice for things such as meeting the actors for the first time among other things, Though I tried to make it to as many things as possible sometimes I just was not able too, which was annoying but also out of my control.

During the pre production our group had multiple meetings, both in person and online where it was made sure we were all up to date and knowing what each of us had to do in between classes/meetings to ensure we didn’t full behind and everyone was contributing to the progress.

As a whole our group’s pre production went very smoothly, the only real hiccup was figuring out the best filming dates that both gave us enough time to prepare beforehand and enough time to edit after the fact, though in the end it worked out well.
