In the exercise we set to create a video with no cuts, presenting the films narrative completely in-camera. This is so we learn to present the narrative through the camera and not the edit.
This exercise doubled as an exercise in communication in both explaining ideas as well as understanding them. The idea behind the video is for someone to catch their own wave so to speak, with the theme we were given as ‘misunderstanding’, we wanted to illustrate the embarrassing scenario where one waves at someone, and another misinterprets it for them, repeating until the first person catches their own wave almost surreally. This concept took awhile for us to grasp, even sketches as the concept was hard to visualise at first. However upon building on the idea and figuring out blocking, the concept became a lot more understandable to where it was almost humorously embarrassing to look back to when it was difficult to grasp.
From this I learnt that patience with an idea, small tweaks and visually demonstrating can be extremely beneficial to understanding the entirety of what i’m filming and how to film it. In addition I also learnt the importance of admitting that I don’t understand the concept, as had it not been explained numerous times through different methods, by the time we got to filming we would have wasted even more time figuring it out there then before in class. This contrasts however with what I argued last week where I suggested that instead of drafting so long we should have stayed minimalistic in scope, however in this exercise we had our idea very early and even more time to plan so the lesson here as well is when to take these different approaches to film making depending on the constraints placed upon us.
