Project brief 3 Ideas Feedback

This week started off with expressing our project brief 3 ideas to the class and a panel of judges.

In my project brief 3, I am choosing to do the genre; horror and the video format. I wanted to explore  the use of colour in horror film, in particular the use of intense and vivid colour in both lighting and costuming. I wanted to use high intensity coloured lighting which was inspired by David Argento 1977 film Suspiria. The film uses intense pinks, blue, reds and greens in both lighting as well as incorporating colour into set design and costuming to create mood and atmosphere within the film. In the article ‘Terror in Technicolor’ the films cinematographer Luciano Tovoli discusses how he uses the ‘uses the fullness and consolatory sweetness of the full colour spectrum, using reassuring primary colours only in their purest essence, making them surprisingly violent and proactive to audiences”. I wanted to experiment use these primary colours, referring to the  high intensity reds and blues and green to experiment with its role in enhancing  mood and tension in the horror genre. Also drawing  inspiration from David Argento’s sequel to Suspiria, Inferno (1980). As well as the 2016 film Neon Demon.

I want to achieve this by using coloured lighting through the use of  coloured cellophane over lights. Additional lighting  may be used with torches/cellophane. I also would like to utilise colour in the film location.  I want to create the intense colour in production rather than in editing in post production.

Feedback I recieved was to focus on what the colour represents in the film. Also to perhaps use LED lighting to avoid cellophane burning on bright lights.
