finished noticing, marking and recording, what now ?

so on monday i finished my noticing, marking and recording, with Maddie’s walk to work, conveniently of course also simultaneously my walk to work on friday night (when I was doing door at the night club). I noticed that there was quite a lot of blue, a decent amount of walking done and quite a bit of people amongst

i’m now rather intrigued as to how this will play out, as i have yet to see maddie’s footage, but as she hasn’t been to south melbourne market before I’m definitely conveniently excited to see what she thinks and how she approached the area – but on top of this, i’m still slightly indecisive as to what my editing process is going to be like, as I feel like with the videos that are portrait –

maybe lingering?

I think this MIFF has made my kind of come to with a realisation that my ideal word will almost certainly be lingering, as I like the idea of being able to bask in a shot for an extended period of time is something I found has been something I’ve found most gratifying in the shots of the films that I was watching at MIFF. The shots in An Elephant Sitting Still worked for lingering two ways, still shots of people in their moment whilst occasionally lingering on the person by acknowledging the importance of that person in their shot – it really captures the alternative thought to lingering beyond still shots a bit more for me

I think something about the concept of lingering that will really benefit me is being able to experience a place through the eyes of a tourist – say when I go to the Whitsundays, embody this but also keep this up in Melbourne. I always think about these old relic videos filmed of Japan in a time that is now past for these kinds of things. It’s really quite peculiar how certain cities can allow for lingering at such ease. It really is

drafting a new recipe

i’m starting to understand more what i feel as if lingering is –

in which i feel like a definition could be as much as

“to bask in a particular facet by way of absorbing the moment, whether it is by way of filming or listening”

as such I’ve drafted a recipe that flows in this manner, that tries to explore various styles of lingering, as i really do feel like you can linger via duration by just letting a camera stay recorded.

ingredients

  • mobile phone camera
  • another non-phone camera
  • recorder (zoom h4)

steps

  • pick one area in line with the overall sentiment of flight and water and record 4 videos for a undecided amount of time (long) to linger by use of duration
  • film and linger on cliffs, let the camera simmer and occupy and take control of the proverbial steering wheel
  • linger on the water, as it moves and interracts with the wind
  • venture towards two areas where there is a clear expectation that there will be airplanes in the sky
  • upon hearing the sound of a plane in the sky, ready one’s camera (in a landscape position) as a means to searching for the plane in the sky, and upon noticing the plane in the sky, keep the camera still and linger on this shot until the plane is no longer in view
  • record the audio of an Event that contextualises centrally what is being filmed

first thoughts

tonight marked 11 days of MIFF, and the 13th film I watched – a bit grotesque but I’m kind of starting to feel like it is benefitting the ideas I’m having in terms of my creative or noticing process. being tasked with finding a new way to understand the shots in which i film and the shots which have been filmed i feel have really helped me. I’m really excited for this upcoming assignment because i’m actually going to go to the whitsundays with my parents for the midsemester break, a facet of my month that came about because my parents were finding it weird without me while i was living in the sublease.

i think holiday planning in general is a step in the noticing praxis, from the outset i’m being tasked to think about what to do and all this planning – but here i think the next step is like since i’m going to the whitsundays i could do a part or portion of my assignment there, but the thoughts that come to my head are like, what do i think about doing?

i google search the words “whitsundays” to start me off – without looking i can think “beaches, food ?” – not much else

seems as if

which is pretty good – I don’t know either – I wouldn’t mind a jetski

I should probably retrieve my gopro

Swimming will be good

Wonder if there are places to walk

theres a lighthouse

what could i do there ?

reflexive

The final edit was enthralling while being quite interesting. As previously mentioned the asset of both our in a way failure to fully mark every thing – or as I would prefer to put it our failure to acknowledge the unfortunate nature of our imperfect minds or something. But the aftermath of this has meant that our work functions in an interesting way, I decided maybe to highlight the other persons failure to mark by accentuating the person who did mark a part of the recipe the other didnt more, – which I feel in a way works really well as it means that the final project when we both reflect might work as a reminder for both of us to acknowledge that we need to learn how to notice more, which in a way is pretty cool. But then accompanying this, the extent to which we follow through with our ideas apart from this I think is also reflected in the edit, or the footage at least as it becomes quite clear the dichotomous nature of the two places, and it doesnt seem too hard to differentiate which footage is sourced from which destination.

That said Im not sure whether this flows, or this is what was intended though I feel like it is as we didnt have any recourse to know what our fellow group members favourite or most knowledge of understanding place would be

I learnt about non fiction and noticing that theres an overlap that exists between both aspects – in which a narrative can in a way be look past or ignored to make way for a video that just presents itself as a video. Having just watched the film NoaA at MIFF, i thought about the films non fiction aspects that help the fictional narrative flow, as they describe the scene before it, in a way.

doing the work

After missing an entire weeks worth of class this week due to my slightly disheveled priorities with radio and miff, it was good to meet with Maddie after class was being held on Wednesday to work out how we would approach the footage. The recipe (Draft 2) that we were working on was quite verbose, and maybe had a ew too many points, and as such I was forgetful about noting interesting things, and Maddie was likewise about filming the colour blue.  All the time of writing I wasn’t sure as to how the blue could get used. But then I realised a combo of layers and overlays for the footage could be really worthwhile. Especially considering another one of the things Maddie and I discussed was to find our favourite bits of audio footage we recorded. Initially planned to be combined  with a black screen but maybe it could be accompanied by this overlaid footage but this works because blue is (as she said) her favourite colour. It did work out quite well though, like in terms of more or less there not really being applicable overlap between the nature of the footage and that nature of the places and the difference between them.

I’m looking forward to the finished product, i’m working on the edit to make up for missing class. But we have both done quite a lot of the edit together so it’s been quite inclusive throughout, though now I have completed the edit I think. Just waiting on Maddie to report back on her thoughts on it

draft recipe ideas

Currently planning out a few draft recipes

  • 5 scond potrait video of you moving around the space
  • – 3 second landsape videos of people moving around in the space
  • 15 second audio recordings of people talking, shop venders, customers etc.
  • 2 second recordings off the food that we are interested in
  • videos of the food we eat
  • 4 second videos fo interesting things we notice.

I’ve just run through this stuff with Maddie, she seems to like the idea of the landscape video.

It’s just been mentioned in class that we should consider the patterns and colours as opposed to specific things so I think I might adjust this. I just thought of filming stores or stalls but as I think this I realise that they’re also things. I just asked Maddie what her favourite colour is, and she said blue, so I think in terms of colour we’ll try to film all the things we see that are blue. Thinking about patterns neither of us can decide what a foreseeable pattern it can be, so maybe even just filming things we conceive to be patterns ?? Hopefully this isn’t too broad but I think it could be okay

preliminary thoughts about the assignment

Thinking about assignment 2 so far has been interesting, as my five words to describe this place i knew inside out (variety, vast, communial, oysters, another word I need to try and remember), was of course – the best market in Melbourne – South Melbourne Market (apologies to Preston, Dandenong and Carribean Market). Maddie’s place in which she knew everything was her route to work, from Flinders St Station to approximately somewhere on Lt Collins St near Elizabeth St – which I think might be my walk to New Guernica, or conversely also occasionally also simultaneously my route to work, as this weekend in going to be working on the door at the monthly rap music night RE-UP.. This is something I’ve just realised whilst writing this and I think in terms of the plans I had for the proposed recipe that I was thinking about while writing this has deviated as now there is this consideration I might be able to film things at night or like at least quite a lot of the nightlife.

In terms of my understanding of Maddie’s route to work I’d say I have quite a clear understanding of  what I  think it iis. There’s numerous ways to walk through to get there. THere’s like walking underground  and then through all the defined commercial retail laneways, Then there are literal laneways. There are the roads that exist, which Maddie makes seem like her usual route to work.

I think it would make sense to be able to borrow a zoom recorder on top of the cameras we use, to be able to create this audio visual piece

I think the recipe should include maybe a mix of styles of camera shots in terms of as basic as landscape and potrait, of things that are or aren’t interesting. Things that involve the food that we eat, otherwise for Maddie I gues it would be annnoying to just go to a market and not do anything other than flming and recording it. Maybe audio recordings of people talking that we can notice on our route

Plenty of food for thought… wouldn’t mind some oysters today
