Week 6: Analogue Video Practice Analysis

Who is the practitioner (what is their name?) and when were they practicing?

Nam June Paik was a Korean American artist, known as the founder of video art who shot on 35mm film. Paik was active in the world of video from 1963 up until his death in 2006.

What is the title of the photo or video you have chosen to analyse (can you provide a link?)

The title of Nam June Paik’s video I have selected is “Magnet TV”.

“Magnet TV” was produced in 1965.

How was the photo or video authored?

In “Magnet TV”, Nam June Paik took a television and attached a strong magnet to the top of the tv. The Magnets attraction caused the rays inside the TV to react abnormally and began altering the images being produced on the TV. Paik intended to manipulate the image the TV was producing to create a piece of abstract video art.

How was the photo or video published?

This Video Art was published in many art galleries around the world and is currently being held in the Whitney Museum of American Art.

How was the photo or video distributed?

This piece was distributed throughout various exhibitions and magazine features. The most recent exhibition being “Programmed: Rules, Codes and Choreographies in art 1965-2018”.
