W2 : A COLLECTION OF LIKE OBJECTS – “No Smoking”

These images of the glued, stickered or nailed down “No Smoking” signs are scattered throughout the opposite ends of the city. Understandably, a lot of people would like to walk past a shop or wait for a tram without smelling and inhaling second-hand smoke metres away. But what about the secluded and often empty areas of the bins and alleyways? Within 4 metres of a building’s back entrance that workers use to have their thirty-minute peace, penalties may apply if they dared to smoke. No one is around to smell it but the law is the law. That being said, that is an over-exaggeration. No one is strictly patrolling these areas nor does anyone care that much. Probably these signs in empty unpopulated areas are to prevent ‘over-smoking’ during their lunch break.

I doubt anyone needs two “No Smoking” signs. Especially two stacked on top of each other. Maybe the stickered one was too small or maybe the other one was too big. It’s silly because it doesn’t make much sense. If you can’t see the sign, that is most likely because you are beyond the four-metre radius. The image shows that the area is empty and not often visited by the general public illustrated through the only blue light source emitting the signs. Without the blue, we would see nothing. Ironically enough, this image hints that this is the place workers would have their smoke breaks. It’s quiet and secluded. Perfect for a smoke.
