Week 8: Fact Check Weekly Blog

In this week’s article, “Is the Earth flat? Meet the people questioning science”, written and observed by Alex Moshakis, who attended UK’s first flat earth convention. The

believers think “that the Earth is not a globe, as most of us think, but some kind of plane, with edges.” Around 200 people have paid to attend. Moshakis stated that the convention had a general consensus that NASA is masking and faking the earth’s imagery and their agency is considered untrustworthy. Two young men were near to believe that the earth is flat, but still not quite there yet. They then had a talk with an older man, and he claimed that NASA is a cover up. Over the years, these believers have grown with many popular influencers to support as well. It would seem over the years, there are more and more people to believe that the earth is flat. A fact check has been done both very long ago and recently as well. Aristotle and Plato claimed that the world is a sphere around 350BC. Another Astronomer Eratosthenes estimated the earth’s circumference back in the 1500’s. Although this fact check is claimed to be right all those years ago, it would seem it does not phase the flat earth believers in today’s society. A solid fact check on this topic to convince the flat earth believers bring be a devastating blow to their beliefs. Personally, I have heard of these flat earth believers from time to time, however the world is such a weird place to live in these strange times, people might convince themselves maybe the earth is flat, and they are ceased to believe it. I personally don’t believe it based on my life growing up seeing imagines of our planet is nearly impossible to convince me that it’s not, no matter how hard they support this.
