RED KUSH is a suspenseful thriller set in Melbourne’s Chinatown. Teen drug dealer Justin faces paranoia and danger after learning his partner Mick’s reckless theft has placed them under the watch of a ruthless Chinese Triad. With growing tension, Justin must navigate betrayal and survival in an unforgiving urban world.

The constraints—using the line “What’s the worst that happens?” and the object, a candle—were pivotal. The dialogue highlighted the stark contrast between Mick’s indifference and Justin’s anxiety, while the candle symbolised Justin’s fragile sense of safety. Filming in Melbourne’s shadowy CBD, we used its dynamic setting to enhance the thriller’s suspenseful tone.

This project required creative problem-solving, especially with night shoots and limited resources. It sharpened our ability to craft impactful stories within boundaries, strengthened our technical skills, and underscored the importance of adaptability and collaboration in filmmaking.
