- I hope that my final work helps to highlight how AI is involved in our everyday navigation decisions and the benefits and limitations of its functions. I find that this topic has gotten a lot of news coverage in recent years however has not necessarily been explained fully, wit
- h few discussions on the tech behind satellite navigation. If my video explainer can better explain these concepts, then I believe that it has succeeded. As a further goal, creating a video the encourages people to seek further information on the topic would be beneficial from my point of view, as making complex topics simple enough to understand and yet presenting them in a way that engages the audience is a key goal of video explainers. I found it enjoyable to learn more about this topic, which has an engaging past, beginning in the Cold War, and hopefully through my video people can find that same enjoyment. My ultimate goal would be to share my enjoyment of the curiosities of history to be shared with a wider audience.
- I believe that this project as a framework had a good premise, and the footage and interview turned out quite well. I’m happy with how much of my B-roll looked, especially considering that I resolved to shoot everything aside from images myself. The colour grade and scenes ended up looking quite professional and I’m proud of how they turned out. The biggest limitation in my opinion was the time limitations that I encountered because of various end-of-term factors, which resulted in me producing a rushed final product that was missing many of the aspects I wished to include. If I could change one thing, it would be to spend less time on the history of GPS systems and instead spend that time explaining how Google Maps uses algorithms.
- As mentioned above, I would love to expand more on the likely algorithms that Google Maps used and provide some visual examples of how these work, as in hindsight this video feels very surface level when it comes to the AI side, partly because I included very little visual cues on what we were talking about in the interview, leaving the viewer to interpret what Professor Duckham was saying. I also think that including some footage of Google Maps in action, of which I did have some storyboarding, would have improved the relevance of the footage in the project. Ideally, I would have included more infographics and other visual cues for the information to increase viewer engagement with the video. The section on the history of GPS and moving timelines would have fit perfectly to give viewers an idea of the progression and speed of change. The history section was meant to highlight the still-emerging nature of satellite navigation; however, I don’t feel that I got this across well, and this is a section that I would rework.
- Learning more about the processes involved in creating a video explainer has been a great experience for me and has already come in handy in my professional endeavours as a I recently produced a video for my college which was adjacent to this genre of video. The process of finding a topic, and reaching out to experts was also quite useful, and it was great to get experience in interviewing people. Being able to reach out to and conduct an interview with a professional was a great experience for me as it cleared a hurdle that many can get stuck on, being the intimidation, you can feel at the idea of contacting people for interviews. As a result of my experience with this class, I feel that I want to expand into the space of video explainers as a professional endeavour and have already been considering some ideas that I may produce video explainers for in the near future.
- Ensuring good communication with all group members is essential to creating good group work, and meeting deadlines effectively. I believe that my group for assignment 2 was a great example of this, as we all reached out to each other, and made clear goals on what we each wanted to achieve. Communication ensures that each group member is on the same page about the requirements of the project and how we can complete it to the best of our ability. Delegating effectively smoothens any issues that might arise and gives flexibility by ensuring that the work can be shifted around if needed. I am grateful to my group members as they were graceful and accommodating in working around my time limitations due to my participating in a musical, they made it easy for me to ensure I was giving my fair share, while also helping me out. Striving to be understanding and empathetic group members is great and makes group projects much smoother.
