The title of this audio piece is possibilia.
Possibilities, by definition, can only exist when they haven’t happened yet. When time moves forward, as it does, and things occur, humans can tend to understand that these possibilities evaporate.
We want to propose that instead of disappearing, they enter a place – a graveyard of sorts – in which their essence still exists. This terrain is where we set the scene for our soundwalk, of sorts. Strange, unstable, yet firmly rooted in place, possibilia explores what it is to future within the realm of hindsight. In The Art of Futuring: Unknown, Unknowable and Uncertain, Kuzmanovic and Gaffney claim that ‘the future already exists in the present, as potential’. In possibilia we probe the notion that the future can exist just as strongly in the past as well.
Through this piece, we pose: if we consider the futures that did not come to pass, what can we learn about the futures that have not been determined yet?
