MASK OFF

Radio Show – ‘Room With A View’

On Tuesday 9 May, Alice, Rosie, Dom and Matt were live on Triple R with their Room With A View show. Featuring interviews with fascinating individuals such as independent journalist Elliott Goodyer, sex worker / author Queenie Bon Bon, and queer socialite Freya Viney, the show was an entertaining smorgasbord of experiences and unique perspectives.

Our group was very pleased with our show and the lessons we learned from it. The importance of collaboration and planning became clear as we produced this show, and having each other to lean on was vital in its success. Developing our audio skills with microphones for interviewing and live radio equipment at the Triple R studio was an absolute thrill and something we will all take with us for the rest of our lives.

Radio Feature – ‘Mask Off’

Why are the dominating depictions of autism male? What does autism in people assigned-female-at-birth (AFAB) look like? What does it feel like? Why are so many AFAB people being misdiagnosed, or diagnosed late? Why do we know so little about it? And what should we know? We interviewed three AFAB people with autism to learn more about the complex interaction between autism and AFAB identity.

Freya Viney was diagnosed at 18 and studies youth work with the goal of helping other struggling young people.

Mika Eugenia Pickles was diagnosed during childhood, whilst struggling with being non-verbal. They are now employed as a sex-worker and artist.

Mindy Hudyma was diagnosed on her 40th birthday to reassure her newly diagnosed daughter that she wasn’t alone.

‘Mask Off’ shares their voices and stories of diagnosis, denial, societal acceptance, self-discovery and revelation. Linked by nothing but their shared diagnosis, their reflections uncover surprising similarities and differences in their experiences with autism.

Our group’s experience with this radio feature felt like an important one. When you are telling the story of an entire group of people, you very much feel responsible in representing them correctly. Getting to know these people and hearing their stories was a joy and something that won’t soon be forgotten. Additionally, the ability to expand our skills and tell this story through an extended audio piece was very rewarding. Armed with Rosie’s extensive research surrounding autism, Alice and Dom conducted the interviews with these wonderful guests. Matt then joined his team in editing the feature, a long process on Adobe Audition that proved to be difficult and arduous but ultimately gratifying. Hearing the life experiences of our guests and further developing our media skills through interviewing and editing on Adobe Audition made this entire process extremely worthwhile.
