Building Equality: Women in The Works

Room With A View: Final Episode

In the final week of the Room With A View season, we presented on Triple R to discuss everything from flu-mania to air guitar. With interviews from van-life enthusiasts ‘Careless Advanture’, construction manager Sarah Tozer, and event-planning entrepreneur, Callum Minutoli, we talk about travel, saving, women in construction, and starting your own business.

We had an amazing time planning this show and are so grateful to those we interviewed. We conducted our interviews before recording our show and were able to play the interviews seamlessly throughout our discussions. We were lucky enough to record this radio show in the Triple R studio after having two practice sessions to learn the intricacies of the panel, editing, and getting used to being in a studio. We also really wanted to work on our comradery as a group in the hope that the show would feel as natural and friendly as possible.

We thoroughly enjoyed gaining experience in the radio industry and all feel like we have got so much out of this studio. In hosting the show, we found confidence in our ability to compose and present, and built strong relationships in the process.

Building Equality: Women in the Works

Through interviews with Sarah Tozer and Sheetal Gounder, Building Equality: Women in the Works delves into the struggles faced day-to-day and throughout the length of a career for women in the construction industry. The interviewees explore how they navigated a male-dominated industry and share their stories of grappling with hurtful stereotypes, as well as their stories of triumph over domineering circumstances.

The first step in making this feature was pitching our idea, which helped to collate our concepts and create a concise vision for the project. Gaining valuable feedback, we were able to improve our structure and angle of the piece. Collecting vox-pops from friends, family, strangers and people in the industry, we were able to gauge the general consensus of public opinion on the issue, and include these opinions within the feature to highlight how womens’ experience contradicts these opinions. We had the opportunity to sit down with Sarah Tozer and Sheetal Gounder, members of the Women in Building organisation, and discuss their experiences in the field. This recording was then edited with our vox-pops to create our final work.

Our objective in this project was to create a feature of consequence; we wanted our piece to convey an important message. We are all very pleased with our final product, having had the opportunity to share valuable, important stories about a subject that is rarely discussed. We feel a strong connection to the issue and feel a sense of pride in getting to advocate for equality.

Written introduction to the radio feature:

Paving their way through a traditionally male-dominated field and challenging norms along the way, both Sarah Tozer and Sheetal Gounder share their stories of working in and navigating the construction industry. With insights from those outside the industry, the underlying issues of inequality and lack of information are revealed.

Join us as we celebrate their experiences, resilience, and unwavering dedication to making the construction industry a more inclusive and equitable industry.
