Spiral

Outline

Our experimental horror short film Spiral focuses on a housewife who, isolated and trapped in a claustrophobic and loveless marriage, begins to spiral into insanity and grotesque and violent hallucinations. As an audience, we’ll never quite know what was real and what was hallucinated, but we’re left to question: has our housewife become trapped or freed by her insanity? And, importantly, where is her husband?

Our Experience

Collaborating together to create our short film was an amazing and fulfilling experience. Whilst we all had experience in making horror films, none of us had ever gone about creating an experimental film and we definitely learnt a lot in the process of making our first one! The key thing we learnt was that, whilst experimental films often seem to lack a distinct narrative, it is vital to create an organised narrative before you begin experimenting in order to have your experimental film seem cohesive and not just look like a series of random clips put next to each other. Essentially, in order to make a good experimental film, the film has to make sense before you can make it not make sense!
