Liminal

Synopsis:

A first person film exploring ideas of leaving and belonging, and asking what might be in the middle. The title refers to occupying a position at, or on both sides of, a boundary or threshold, and this is how I feel that I relate to these concepts.

Process of this film:

This film started with an idea of exploring the concept of ‘roots’, which it still very much is. I changed my approach quite a few times, and faced multiple dead ends, but it eventually came together, and reflected my original idea with more complexity, and with more of myself in it. The conflict I found myself in between these two seemingly binary concepts formed the base for which I could include myself and my perspective in this film.

What I got out of it:

I forced myself to step out of my comfort zone in a lot of ways during the making of this film, and I have a bit more trust in myself to try new approaches, to experiment, and to think about taking creative risks. I also never felt like this was an assignment that I just had to get done. I cared a lot about making this film. I hope I can invest myself in future uni films to the same extent that I felt invested in this one.
