Before You Sleep – Sufeeyatuz Zahra Jali

‘Before You Sleep’ is a short film that explores the different sights and sounds that you begin to notice when drowned in the darkness of of the night right before you go to sleep. Being aware of the passing and ever-growing sounds and the active imaginations that awakens in the darkness allows one to feel that there is more to “sight” than actually seeing.

This film was shot on an iPhone 11 during night time. The camera was mounted on a tripod facing the view of the outside through the window, while alluding to the motions around the room through the reflection on the window. The sounds that are included in the film was recorded separately. This allowed me to easily manipulate the volume, panning and pace of the sounds in post-production. The whole aim of the short film is to bring the audience through a sensory journey that forces the viewer to notice the build up of each distinctive sound while simultaneously picking out the visuals on the screen – tying back to personal experiences that the viewer undergoes themselves at night before going to sleep.

Through this film task, I was able to explore the different perspectives through the placement of the camera. The framing of content was also important in engaging the audience by showing the room as least as possible. I had to keep in mind what was to be included in the clip, including the actions of turning on the light at the cease of all sounds – and how that should be framed to “show a lot by showing a little”. I thought that such was an interesting concept to explore and hopefully well-executed in the film produced.
