The Subjectivity In Cinema

Perdrix (2019)

The ability to completely break all rules of the real world is what makes film unlike any other creative medium. There is no reason a film’s diegetic world needs to be one of ‘realism’.
I’m not referring to breaking the ‘rules’ which define how a ‘good’ film is made, but instead the rules of the world within that film. Things like the laws of physics, the laws of communication, and the laws of logic/continuity; these can easily be thrown out the window if a filmmaker is brave enough.
For my research project I have investigated into the ways a filmmaker can break the spatial and/or temporal continuity of their film to create a ‘moment of subjectivity’, presenting a literal representation of one or more character’s subjective experience of reality.
I have also investigated the relationship between these moments, genre, and culture, with plenty of video examples to demonstrate my findings.
