Getting Into Character

2020

RED VELVET – Aubree Maranan

A young woman has decided to bake a cake for a loved one reminiscing on their two years together, however, she is not celebrating a birthday or valentines day…

In this project, I had to think of an idea that I could film within the confines of my own house due to lockdown restrictions and this is what I came up with. In this studio, we learnt a lot about characterisation. Because of this, I thought it would be an interesting way to show the development of it in my protagonist through colour. In my film, I decided to use pink/red and black nail polish, clothes and makeup to coincide with her transformation from a bending-over-backwards girlfriend into a menacing, cheeky ex.

The main thing I’ve learnt throughout this process is to adapt and overcome. Having to act, direct and partially film a short by yourself can be challenging. But in a time where there’s limited avenues and resources for collaboration, I’ve learnt to just try your best with what you have.
